Help for Zapped Frosting

I had some leftover frosting from my last cake that I stored in my fridge. When I took it out to use on some cupcakes tonight, I found it stiff and a little dry, so I zapped it in the microwave to try and soften it up.

Well, I melted the butter (it's from scratch: basically confectioner's sugar, chocolate and butter) in the frosting and now it sort of broke down -- oily and gritty. I tried to reset it by sticking it back into the fridge (hoping to harden the butter again), but is there any trick to get it to that nice fluffy and smooth consistency from when I first made it?
