It turns out the most recent estimated opening date was accurate. Zankou WLA opened its doors at 10:00am today.
The decor features more hardwoods than your average Zankou (forever to be known as the Danish Modern Zankou). And the space is larger and airier than all but the Aneheim location. Parking could be a trick, the lot has fewer than 30 spaces (and turning into it from the southbound lanes of Sepulveda is tough).
The menu has beccome pretty standard in all of the satellite locations (especially now that they've got their glossy new signboards). At this location there is a premium of almost a dollar for 1/4 white meat as opposed to 1/4 dark -- this wasn't true the last time that I was at the Van Nuys location). As with all Zankou locations, going in at 10:00am (as I did in my overeagerness) guarentees that the chicken won't be quite as crisp as usual... but everything else is as wonderful.
We had a Tarna Wrap (terrific as always), a 1/4 dark meat chicken plate (less crispy because of the hour of the day), and a falafel plate... which was perfectly amazing because they had to fry up the falafel fresh (the best falafel I've ever had at a Zankou... and I already was a big fan of their falafel).
The line was growing as we left. It looks like word of their opening got out quickly. Thankfully, other than mixing up the Sprite and the Root Beer on the soda fountain (serve yourself drinks, which is an improvement over the Van Nuys location), there were no major opening day problems and everything was great.
Then we went to Sprinkles for Red Velvet cupcakes for dessert.
