The 2003 Zagat for LA arrived today. Top food rating (28/30) is reserved for 3 sushi institutions: Matsuhisa, Nozawa, Sasabune.
I don't really have a problem with Matsuhisa's top rating--although, like much of Zagat, the rating may be based more on accumulated long-term reputation than on current performance, Matsuhisa remains pretty special.
But I don't think the other 2 places deserve a top-of-the-city rating for anything except inflexible crankiness. I haven't been to Nozawa in a long time, but I do still end up at Sasabune once in a while--and in all honesty, except for the still-great crab roll, I don't think Sasabune is even the best sushi bar on Sawtelle (try Kiriko), much less best in LA. And it is my impression from reading this board that most of the 'Hounds would agree--but I could be wrong.
Anyone care to save me the trouble of ranting further about this? Or perhaps others have had different experiences?
By the way, most of zagat.com became a pay-only site today. I don't really begrudge Tim and Nina their decision to stop making all their ratings available over the net for free. But I do wonder how many people will think the internet service is worth paying for.
