Special thanks to 'Hobobrian' who recently posted his favorite Hoboken restaurants and brought my attention to this place which i hadn't yet tried.
I followed his list with my list of favorites, and while we both stopped short of saying that the dining scene here is bad, we both agreed it isn't what it should be!
Well, Zack's Oak Bar is a welcome addition to my new list of places to frequent, although i will add that my experience may have been augmented by a restaurant that was NOT busy (i don't enjoy being rushed or cramped while i'm eating out).
The decour is nice for a "bar restaurant" and the service was some of the best i've had in Hoboken... everything from being friendly, refilling my water glass, offering to bring add'l bread when the basket was empty, to helping me decide between two entrees.
The menu ranges from the typical bar-fare burgers and chicken sandwiches to pasta dishes, as well as a few fish options. We had an oriental noodle dish with shrimp, and one of the specials of the day, a turkey dinner. The pasta was ok, but the shrimp that accompanied them looked great and tasted better. The turkey special was the real highlight... a few slices of fresh turkey, covered in gravy, served with mashed potatoes, vegetable of the day (green beens) and cranberry sauce. While the turkey was very good, the mashed potatoes were AWESOME. The only thing that would have made this dinner better would be if it was served with stuffing.
I'm sorry i hadn't tried this place sooner. As most new places i try in town are disappointing, this was a pleasant surprise and i will be back again!
