Once upon a time there was a little place on the corner of 8th and Clement called "Yunan Restaurant". They had a rather usual Chinese Menu, most of which was not bad, but not great. HOWEVER...They had one dish called "House Special Garlic Chicken". This rather ordinary sounding dish was actually incredibly meaty chicken drumettes in a crispy coating glazed with garlic, ginger and scallions...No real discernable sauce, but little crunchies at the bottom which were delicious mixed with rice. I've had similar dishes many times at other Chinese restaurants but nothing has ever come close! Even the next day out of the refrigerator these tasty morsels were extraordinary. I knew something was up when the first time I entered the restaurant it was full, and every table had at least one order of this dish on their table. The Yunan closed many years ago, and was replaced by the "Number One Dumpling House". I tried it once, hoping that some of the magic might have remained in the walls. In fact, the new owner assured me that they were serving the exact same dish, but better. They were so wrong. Does anyone remember this place and those wings? Where they might be now, or at least a reasonable facsimile?
