Tonight I stopped by Chromatic coffee on my way home and noticed Yum Noodles a few doors down. What a happy find! Yum Noodles specializes in the flavors of Changsha (Hunan province) and offers a variety of noodle soups (or dry style) and spicy cold dishes. It's been open about a year and a half.
Besides the food quality, the service is remarkably fast. Our pork belly rice noodle soup, spicy duck gizzards, spicy duck necks and spicy pig ears all arrived at the table less than 5 minutes after we ordered them. And the place was pretty busy at that moment. My favorite of the these three cold dishes was the gizzards, savory with garlic and medium-hot. The duck necks were the spiciest of the three, and the meat came off the bones readily. Pig ears were too firm and chewy for me, but some might prefer them that way.
Toothpick beef came out a bit later. Served cold, the small cubes of lean beef were a little tough. Tasty though dusted with a blend of cumin, chile flakes, garlic, and other elusive spices.
This shows the chopped red chiles offered as a condiment. The food was plenty spicy for me, but my brother enjoyed a dab of this to enhance the soup noodles.
William commented that the food was less salty than other Chinese restaurants, and particularly Hunan places. The owner explained that this is intentional, as well as using less oil, for the Bay Area's health conscious customers. He has also toned down the spice levels, and checked in with us several times to see if the food was too hot. Still, we found much that we liked here and would definitely return.
