I posted a little earlier about our dinner tomorrow night (Weds) with the three visitors from the west coast. Thanks, by the way, to the people who responded....but the deal changed: instead of our picking the place, they, on the recommendation of several of their friends from SF, chose a place they "have " to try. It's Sette Mezzo on the Upper East Side. I think I'm bummed.
First, the Upper East Side is rather inconvenient for my wife and I, who have to commute by train from Penn Station back to NJ after dinner.
Second, I find with pricey Italian restaurants that you can frequently get better food from a can of Chef Boyardi. I know there are great Italian restaurants in NYC. I've been to many...but frankly, the ones that come highly recommended by tourists are usually the ones I'm most afraid of (sorry to the tons of folks I've just inadvertently offended.)
Third, this place is cash only. Now the deal with our friends is that they are paying, because we treated them to dinner at Balthazar (and brunch at Odeon) on Sunday. They insisted that we let them pay. But I'm pretty sure they're unaware that it's a cash-only joint--I don't want to seem tacky by warning them in advance, but I also don't feel like shelling out another $300-400 (I'm sure they'd offer to reimburse us, but accepting that would be awkward....)
Anyway, someone please tell me I'm wrong. Please tell me you've been there, it's your Sicilian grnadmother's favorite, whatever....or, if you must, warn me in advance, so at least I can stop at Pietrasanta on the way and have a decently priced excellent pasta dish.
