Yosemite- 2016: Wawona wow - Ahwanee - meh

Yosemite - National Park: (2016)

Of course most know it is not really the Wawona but Big Trees Lodge and the Ahwanee is now the Majestic Yosemite Hotel since these concessions were turned over to Aramark and someone forgot they gave the right to the use of the historic names to the prior concessionaire who is not giving them up. Since tradition dies hard with me, i will continue to use their former landmark names.

The food in the Wawona Hotel was terrific the one dinner and two breakfasts we had there. DH had the beef stew and I had the chicken breast picatta - loaded with lovely capers. We couldn't stop talking about how good each of them were flavored and presented, along with the sides which were equally delicious. I had the allegedly low calorie carrot cake which was goody, rich and delicious and I suspect double the size of the posted calories.

For breakfast, I had their egg-white "frittata" with turkey sausage patties for breakfast which was also delicious seasoned with a lovely salsa. DH was equally pleased with their pancakes and later with their standard two-egg classic breakfast.

Our dinner at the Ahwanee was not as successful but was okay, with a nice variety of choices but alas did not do justice to the setting. I had their mushroom ravioli -kind of meh, DH had the osso bucco with polenta and enjoyed it. Splitting the toffee cake for two was an okay end to the meal, in which the setting out-did the cuisine.

I was hoping at least this new concessionaire would maintain the same dining quality at both locations, but it was not the case. Wawona was clearly the winner and no one can say Yosemite Park is the vast culinary wasteland of its prior reputation. Service at both locations were very good under this new concessionaire, both on the hotel and restaurant sides.

US Park Service: Please bring back the rights to the Yosemite historic names so the Ahwanee Gift Shop can sell quality items again, instead of the pure junk they were offering now after losing the right to Ahwanee logo items. And keep bringing up the quality of dining in both these lovely, historic settings.
