A couple weeks ago I stopped by Yo el Rey coffee roaster in downtown Calistoga for the morning caffeine. When I ordered a cappuccino, the barista asked me if I wanted more or less foam. I asked for "less" and still received a big mound of foamed milk that made me wonder what "more" foam could possibly look like.
I had complimented the barista on the set-up for pour-overs and did regret that I did not go that route instead. The house-roasted coffee underneath that puffery was quite pleasant. What I could taste of the underlying coffee was a well-balanced medium roast, nutty and mellow, just not much of it.
On hearing my tale of this bizarre cup, my local friends advised that this is the best roaster in the valley. They encouraged me to try a straight espresso next time and stay away from the milk.
