Inside Yellow Submarine

When I was growing up in Minnesota there was a place that made delicious hot cheese hoagie sandwiches and when I moved to California I came to the depressing realization that I would never find one here. As with many things, Californians do things differently than in the midwest.

Yellow Submarine on Irving Street in San Francisco is a family run restaurant that serves Boston style sub sandwiches. Being a vegetarian I like their Cheese Combo which reminds me of the hoagies I grew up on but even better because they add hot sauce. For years I have been making sandwiches and I can't believe I never thought of adding hot sauce.

Sandwich making is an artform and probably my biggest criticism of sandwich shops is usually poor construction. At Yellow Submarine, no matter who makes your sandwich it is always constructed perfectly. They understand the importance of a consistantly well made sandwich which I find very impressive.

The Cheese Combo has swiss, provolone and american cheese on a fresh roll oven toasted with onion, tomato, lettuce and pickle. The home made hot sauce is really good and really hot! The fries are a cross between a french fry and a potato chip and the portions are huge so if you go with a friend, only order one order of fries.

If you are a sandwich lover or transplant from Minneapolis and you remember the hoagies, take a drive to the Inner Sunset and don't forget to stop at the ATM because they are cash only.>
