Haven't done anything major in years. Remember what SIL did when Y2K was gonna put an end to civilization as we knew it. BIL is a computer guy and HAD to work NYE. And toddler would have made major partying not an option.
She threw a "slumber party"... with RULES! Ya HAD to show up in PJs, even if not sleeping over. You couldn't bring "typical" party munchies. NO envelope of onion soup mix in sour cream as onion dip. No block of ordinary cheese with ordinary crackers.
I had a birthday gift certificate that was unused... became a platter of crab claws. Made escargot... swimming in butter & garlic... with nice bread for dipping into. NOT a big liver fan, but made a Martha S recipe for pate... had apples and onions in it... was a hit.
SIL had MINOR broiler fire with an Omaha Steaks Chateaubriand... no harm done, but a bit scary with smoke alarms blaring.
Most people came like for a costume party... changed and headed to points unknown. I crashed on couch. On New Years Day, we ushered it in with a MASSIVE breakfast/brunch... loaded with bacon!
