One of my fondest early childhood memories is perching on a stool at Blum's eating a piece of coffee crunch cake with my dad. He knew each of the locations in the City and on the Peninsula and would sneak away with me while my mom was shopping.
While Blum's is long gone, coffee crunch cake is still with us and one of my favorite versions is at the Sweet Stop in Japantown. I stopped there recently to pick up a slice for my parents, but unfortunately, coffee crunch was already sold out at the end of the day. I did snag a piece of lemon crunch (my sister's favorite) and a slice of mocha roll. I think the total was $5.50.
Both were wonderful, thick with real whipped cream and fluffy yet dense cake. William commented that the roll filled with mocha whipped cream was unusual because it had more cream than cake . . . not that he was complaining.
