Yamato in WW = Eh. . .

so the zu robata and yamato contest ended in yamato.

first, i have to say how talented certain photographers are. i think i saw the pictures on eaterla - and they were beautiful. i was a bit disappointed in the acutal look of the place when i went in. it was just a bit too cold. i felt like they could have really done something if they painted the relief - or painted the walls that did not have relief so there was some action going on. there was a lot of glass and the acoustics were a little rough. it was also cold in terms of temperature - we left our coats on the entire time. and interesting part of the booths is that they are very high and you cannot see other diners from the inside of your booth. that's sort of fun.

we started with miso soup - regular. this was literally some of the tastiest miso i have had in a long time. it had quite a bit of seaweed and tofu in it and was just all around yummy.

we had the crispy rice with spicy tuna. it was basically a cut roll that was some how made crispy and then topped with a dollup of spicy tuna. this was pretty good. the crispy rice overpowered the tuna unfortunately and the tuna was not spicy. but other than that - it was a nice little treat.

we had the crispy rice with unagi. this was teh same thing except for a piece of unagi on top. same review - pretty good/not great - but this was a bit bigger than the tuna one and so was hard to make it a mouthfuul.

i think these were about $7 to 9/each

then we had sushi - yellowtail, tuna, unagi, salmon, torro. the sushi was about $4-5/each. the torro had 3 grades low (which was conveniently sold out ) for $10, medium for $15 and top for $20.

tuna - kind of a funny taste. i'm not really sure how to place it, but it didn't taste like tuna.

unagi - not crispy which was v. disappointing. it tasted fine, but i like unagi crispy on the edges. also - one of mine had a bone in it which was unappetizing.

yellowtail - tasted fine but one of the pieces was cut in a way that made it look "rough" - like not a smooth piece of fish and i didn't like to look at that.

i didn't try the toro.

the worst part, however, was that my clothes were absolutely saturated with the smell of the restaurant - sweet unagi sauce and fish and . . . ? it was like i was sitting in a fume filled room. i didn't notice any particular smell in teh restaurant - but when i was out of it - it was just overwhelming. so that's a bad sign.

obviously - i won't be back. but now i know. . .
