Dragged ourselves crosstown to finally try these out. Was in very high anticipation as heard so amny good things about this place on this board, saw that itwas written up in SF Mag, and generally woke up to intense longing for Joe's Shanghai in NYC.
Was rather disappointed. Ask our waiter if the dumplings were soup dumplings and he just kept telling us it was XLB. No matter... ordered an order along with some shanghai noodles and dry stir-fried green beans. The XLB had okay skin thickness, but did not have much soup and was not very flavourful. We ate the steamer-full up... but non-plussed. The noodles were good. But the string beans were over-fried and salty as all hell. Walked away feeling very dejected.
Was this an off meal? Is there a better place in SF for soup dumplings more in the manner of Joe's Shanghai in NYC? What is the difference btwn soup dumplings and XLB, if any?
