Recommended by Chowhound alum, Professor Salt, I tried the xiao long bao (XLB) at Lee's BaoZi on my January road trip to Orange County. I believe there's been a change of ownership in the past year since his visit here.

Lee's BaoZi is a small place tucked into a nondescript strip mall. Parking was a bit tight at lunch hour and the restroom on a different floor requires a key. The restaurant seemed busy with delivery orders. It does offer table service and there were two other parties seated while I was there.

The XLB are steamed in stainless steel baskets rather than bamboo. The wrappers looked way too thick. Yet they were tender and delicate to the bite. These wrappers were the bread-y type rather than the thin, unleavened style, more akin to a bun (bao) instead of a Shanghai-style XLB dumpling. It's been decades since I've run across this type and it was interesting to have them again. The loose-textured pork filling was rather plain in taste. I'd describe these as "juicy" rather than soup-y. Yet only one of them had leaked and this was a satisfying lunch.

I'd happily order these again and try more from the menu.
