Xaviers in Piermont--what a treat

I was lucky enough to be taken to Xaviers at Piermont on Sunday night. What a lovely evening! The place itself is tiny--only 10-12 tables in a renovated storefront, and the service is terrific (though one or two of the waiters seemed to have left their senses of humor at the door). And the food covered a wide range in choices--a few kinds of fish, veal, venison, pheasant, beef--and styles--French, Italian, Asian, and just plain interesting and creative.

For $55 prix fixe, you get three courses, plus the extras (an amuse-bouche, a champagne sorbet between courses, petit fours that include what may be the best chocolate-dipped strawberries in the world). A lengthy and extensive wine list.

Some of the dishes we had were, for appetizers: oyster casserole (very rich and creamy), crispy coconut shrimp with mustard sauce, a lovely Asian lobster salad with lots of ginger, lotus root, and citrus. Main courses included red snapper with lobster sauce (that's lots of chunks of sweet, tender lobster), rouget with a ragout of veggies in a pernod-flavored sauce. But I think desserts are their strongest suit: if you're a choc fan, you've gotta get the Baked Chocolate. Then there's expresso mousse in a chocolate cup, fruit soup with an island of angelfood cake and sorbet floating in it, and more. I'm going into sugar shock just thinking about it.
