Native New Englander here who is used to a white Christmas (or at least the promise of one!), but this year I'm living and working in New Zealand. Now I generally can't complain - this is perhaps the most beautiful country in the world and I'm endlessly happy here, but I am totally stuck on food inspiration. I'm excited to have a good kitchen after a year+ of travel, but I find myself totally stuck on what to cook, despite the availability of good early-summer produce. Maybe it's because I so love autumn cooking and am stuck in a post-Thanksgiving jealousy funk?
One challenge at a time: Christmas. What the hell do you cook for the holidays when the holidays involve BBQs and dips in the lake? I've been invited to an orphan's X-Mas/cookout and would like to bring something, but none of the BBQ/4th of July type recipes are calling out to me. There HAS to be a way to combine summer eating with festive food. Can any southern hemisphere folk give me any advice? What on earth do y'all cook for Christmas? Am I overthinking this?
Thanks for any help!
p.s. I will possibly make ginger crunch - by far my favorite Kiwi dish so far, although it has awoken a sweet tooth I never knew I had and fear I will never suppress.
