Recently bought some whole herring from a local butcher shop. I was gutting them when I encountered something I'd never seen before. One of the fish had basically no guts or they were very minimal and underdeveloped. The flesh of the fish was also weirdly dense and firm on one side and pale yellow in color. Once the fish had been cut open, the skin basically slipped right off the fish. It was very gross. It didn't smell rotten or exhibit general signs of rot. All of the other herring were normal, had guts and regular flesh. I've done several searches and I can't seem to find anybody else with a similar experience. Anybody know what was wrong with that fish?
