My worst meal in NO.

Spencer | Jan 13, 200302:35 PM

Hands down, the worst meal I’ve had in NO, if one could call it a meal, was 2 years ago at the Lucky Dog stand on Bourbon St. I have seen this stand on Bourbon for years and cannot look at it without wondering how many Lucky Dogs have been regurgitated in the Quarter in the wee hours by those who’ve had 1 Hand Grenade too many.
Anyway, I was there with my three best friends- wife, Rich, and Dana. We ordered Lucky Dogs from that stand. I took one bite and my southern manners were the only thing that kept me from spitting that bite on the street. It was just AWEFUL! I immediately threw my Lucky Dog in the nearest trash can. Almost before it hit the can this homeless woman, looking nappy as a bowl of slaw, came darting out of this alley, seized the Lucky Dog from the trash and started heading up Bourbon- talking to the Lucky Dog as she went! (I work in the mental health field, so her behavior wasn’t shocking to me. I did wonder, however, if the Lucky Dog was answering her.) I chased her down the street and asked her to stop, which she did with some prompting and, I am sure, some paranoia. I told her to throw that Lucky Dog away- “You shouldn’t get food out of the trash- it could make you sick”, I said. To which she replied, “No, it’s my Lucky Dog.” She also mumbled something to the dog that I couldn’t hear. After a few more pleas and at my complete insistence she threw the dog down. I led her back to the stand and purchased her a brand new Lucky Dog, with the works. She asked if I would buy her some smokes as well, but I declined. She put her new Lucky Dog in her bag and headed back up Bourbon. I shouldn’t have been surprised when she picked up the afore mentioned Lucky Dog out of the gutter and resumed her conversation and her meal.
One man’s garbage is another’s prize, I guess.
