Worst of Houston

John Scar | Oct 6, 2003 06:20 PM

Since the houston press had the best of issue recently I thought I would throw out my own worst of issue. Some places will be left off that I generally hate (Ruggles) because I haven't been in over a year.

John's worst of

Worst beef noodle soup - Cali Sandwich on Travis

I hated to put this here because I do enjoy the food here except for the BNS. The banh mi, viet egg rolls, and the vermicilli dishes are really good. The taste of the BNS just wasn't what i like compared to Santong Snacks and Thiem Hunh (whatever the name is on Pease).

Worst popular Restaurant - Cafe Red Onion

Ok the food isn't bad but cmon with the "Haystack". Just becuase you have red strips of fried tortillas doesn't make you on the cutting edge. Also the grease overload is a little overboard.

Worst Pasta - Nicks, I think, in the ft bend area.

Too bad because it could be a fairly cool place but the food is boring.

Worst Burrito - Mission Burrito in a landslide

Thank god my wife has ran out of her free dinners there (she got them from work) because this is by far the most bland food in the city. I bet you could get tastier food at a retirement home.

Worst mex dish - Crab quesidillas at El Tiempo

Against my better judgement I ordered this dish because people had been raving about it. I know crab and cheese don't mix but the New Orleans Creoles have made it work so I thought maybe these guys did. I was wrong and it cost me $16 or so.

Worst BBQ - Pappas

My wife wanted a baked potato and I got some que and it was aweful. They have some nasty rub they use that I can't stand.

Worst taco - Tripas taco at Matamoros Meat Mkt on Washington

Ok some of the tacos are alright and I have only had a few tacos de tripas in my life but this taco sucked. It had a burnt taste and was way slimier then the ones that are good at the farmers market (El Tacombaro).

Thats it for now. i'll keep thinking. hopefully some others will have more to add. After I started thinking about this more I realized that I didn't have many bad meals this year. I guess you could credit chowhound for that or you could also say I haven't taken enough chances either. Either way I am really glad that this was hard to put together.
