I found a fabulous old world pizzeria called NINO's
on E14th and Ave.U in Bensonhurst. Sandwiched tight
in this mostly oriental neighborhood is a pizzeria
direct out of my childhood. Eating slices in this joint brings you immediately back to years gone just by soaking in the wood paneling and unmatching chairs that hug the tables straight out of the early 70s.
As for the food- Slices- Round and Sicilian. The
Round slice was good, and the Sicilian was excellent IMO. Both are elevated by a wonderful sauce which was the first smell that hit me the minute I walked into the shop. While eating, I peered into the back kitchen and saw an older Italian woman stirring a metal spoon in a big silver metal pot. That image alone will bring me back.
Finally, upon leaving I ordered a meatball hero and it did not dissapoint. The bread was crusty and meatballs were fresh and covered in the miracle tomato sauce that's becoming harder and harder to find these days.
