Each of the three times I've visited my friends at Fat Angel Farm,
I've been curious about the market on the main road before the turn-off to their property. I finally asked about it and got an introduction on Halloween.
Greenspot Market is a local landmark and has been here for more than 100 years as different enterprises. Pulling up to park, I was close enough to see the mural promoting "World Famous Jerkee".
The staffer in the clown suit offered tastes of the beef jerky from the big selection of flavors. But I went with my friend's recommendation and purchased a quarter-pound of Smoked Cowboy flavor. It's $36 per pound and handed over in a brown paper bag. Intensely meaty, less salty than most, not sweetened, and dried hard so that you're not paying for any moisture. I tucked a piece into the corner of my mouth to soak up moisture, and it soon revealed layers and layers of complex flavors. A little bit goes a long way.
If you're not picking citrus and avocados or visiting friends as I was, Greenspot might be on your route to Palm Springs, which is 45 minutes away, or on the way to Big Bear, an hour's drive. And if not, this is a beef jerky destination and worth a visit just for that.
