Some Wonderful Specialties at Rainbow Cafe

David Feldman | Jan 31, 2005 11:43 PM

A generous Chowhound took me to several cool places on a cold weekend night a couple of weeks ago.

The highlight for me was our brief stop at Rinbow Cafe (60 Beach St.) in Chinatown. All we ate at Rainbow were two items from the snack section. I've enjoyed fried cuttlefish balls elsewhere, but these are expertly fried, delicate in taste, and full of textural variety. But my favorite was the oyster pancake, which I've never had before. The pancake is studded not only with oysters, but little nuggets of caramelized shallots -- great stuff!

Mama was in the kitchen and her daughter was serving us -- both of them had great pride in their offerings.
