Wonderful dinner at Mozambique - Laguna

torta basilica | Mar 22, 200606:07 PM

Beautiful redecoration of the old Tortilla Flats. One smaller room to the right - this seems more formal, but very comfortable with a roaring fireplace. The other room to the left doesn't seem as plush, but there are nice banquettes in back that would be good for 2 or 4 poeple. Also, a small patio off this room. Upstairs, large bar, with an elegant patio off it of. People were eating dinner up here, too, so may request that next time for a more casual dinner. South African specialties with a huge menu. Excellent service, peri peri explained to those that didn't know & amuse bouchees of hybrid tomato/little red peppers (is there really such a thing? - if yes, let me know where to find!) stuffed with goat cheese artichoke mousse with peri peri & some other sauce sauce dribbled on the side. One bite of pure deliciousness! I was with a less adventurous group, but everything on the menu sounded wonderful. Shared a great cold seafood platter (it actually had seafood taste to it, instead of frozen mush you find most places) - large meaty shrimp & lots of crab meat, with 3 oysters. I had a (special) grilled romaine salad with... mixed home dried sundried tomatoes, mozzarella and... some other goodies & it was absolutely incredible. Not too grilled, tons of tomatoes, wonderful dressing - just a perfect dish. Best appetizer - cold seared ahi (I believe with ponzu dipping sauce on a mound of Asian veggies) that had just an incredible meaty, yet melting texture - one of the best versions of this ever & plenty of ahi. Short ribs were very good & not lots of the usual fat blobs in them, peri peri chicken & shrimp good, but not earthshaking. I had the Durban curry - lamb curry with toasted basmati, which was thick, meaty & excellent. A side of asparagus & mac n cheese (had a kid with us) looked tempting, too. I am going back for the pomegranite syrup glazed double lamb chops & foie gras terrine. Dessert - a fruit bread pudding that was crunchy, buttery, puddingy, spiked with berries - I don't usually like bread pudding & I'd order this again! (It was my Bday & complimentary)

I really can't wait to get back & try everything on their menu - the steaks & fish sounded very tempting too!!
