Four of us went to Wonderful Chinese at Auburn Blvd. and Old Auburn Rd. in Citrus Heights on Sunday. We arrived just at noon, and there were only a few parties in the dining room. About 15 minutes after we were seated, though, the main dining room was full. Seemed like mostly after-church families.
The Hot & Sour soup was a real winner. Very rich stock, great balance of hot-sour-salty, and lots of ingredients. The medium bowl gave us each two servings, and is only a dollar more than the small bowl.
Braised eggplant with pork was an outstanding dish, though the eggplant was just a bit more tender than I like it. Still, the seasoning was superb, there was lots of tender pork chunks, and a few black mushrooms and bamboo shoots.
Curried squid was another winner. The squid was scored in two directions, and with the yellow color of the curry, they looked like little cobs of corn. Remarkably tender, with a great curry sauce with just the right amout of sweetness.
Chicken fried rice came in a huge portion. At first we were dismayed to see frozen peas and carrots in it, but upon closer tasting the peas and carrots were fresh. The cut of the carrots only LOOKED like frozen ones -- is this a case where art imitates life? Plenty of stringy tender chicken chunks, and the dish was not at all greasy.
Wonderful Chinese compares well with good Chinese restaurants in the SF Bay area. Prices, though are lower. The bill for four including tax and tip was $32.
We will definitely go back.
