Oh Woey Loy Goey, you scared me again! Chinese restaurants were hit particularly hard at the start of the Coronavirus pandemic and many shutdown even before the shelter-in-place orders. This restaurant is more than 100 years old, and a permanent closure would have been a loss of a piece of my childhood. in my lifetime, I saw it boarded up once before with no explanation. Fortunately, that time it emerged with a remodeled interior in 2001. Having heard that it reopened last week, I made it my mission on Wednesday to order a meal there.
This turned out to be Day 7 of reopening. The ladies that take your order don't speak much English but they were in good spirits to be back again. They had some homegrown sweet yellow plums to give away. For my re-entry to-go meal, I picked the Duck Flavor Yee Won Ton, $8.50. The same as the last time it opened anew. I'm glad I could read my description from 2002, as the dish was identical down to the sliced snow peas. Only the price has changed. I ate a good portion of it in the car, wanting to enjoy the wontons before they got too soggy. https://www.chowhound.com/post/duck-y...
One other customer came down the steps to this "hole in the ground" (the term coined by Chowhound alum, David Boyk https://www.chowhound.com/post/woey-l...) while I was waiting for my food. I paid attention to his order, as he seemed to be a regular. He got the fried chicken wings. Seems he had the same thought, as he asked me what my favorites are here. I told him that I like the tang yuen and had ordered the duck yee fu won ton. He exclaimed, "Oh yeah, the yee won tons! I'm gonna come back to get that for dinner."
I'm so happy that New Woey Loy Goey is back. May it live another 100 years.
