For the second time this season we accidentally ended up at a Winterlicious restaurant. Bizarrely The Rosedale Diner is listed under 'T' - so we had another Winterlicious meal. And because Winterlicious ends tomorrow, you only have 24 hours to take advantage of this fun place.
No, it's not fine dining - but it's the comfort food your mother never used to make.
For $25 you get great value - which varies somewhat from the published Winterlicious menu. Now included in the starters is a breaded deep-fried smoked trout croquette. Serviceable, but the spicy sauce accompanying it (along with a mayonnaise) is superb - really lifts the spirits on a cold snowy night. The soup (lentil) is somewhat bland but quite tasty.
For mains there's now a new item - Pulled Pork Poutine. No, you won't find it on Susur's menu - but it's amazingly tasty (and fattening). Just right for heading off to the North Pole. And the chocolate and chipotle braised veal cheeks again are perfect for the weather. OK the spicing is muddy, but the cheeks are super-tender and this is one of the more creative Winterlicious dishes.
Admittedly our wine came to more than the $50 for the food, so our bill wasn't the bargain others might expect.
But I doubt you'll find a more interesting (and tasty) $25 at 'Licious this year.
PS Desserts were just too sweet - but at that price who cares?
