Amid a blackhole of ho-hum restaurants in Winona, MN, there is a shining star. Winona Gardens opened it's doors despite two other oriental restaurants within walking distance of its 3rd Street downtown location. Reasonable prices, good portion sizes, fast service and a large and diverse menu are what makes this fare a step above the others. Besides a large selection of Chinese items, they have Thai dishes. Thai food is fresh, crisp and bright. There are a multitude of curries used in Thai dishes. Red and green curries are most common but there are also yellow varieties. The heat and flavor is similar in each but there are subtle differences. Lemongrass, also used frequently, adds a unique brightness.
The chefs at Winona Gardens are eager to please and will make special request for you. If you have never tried Basil Fried Rice, ask for it with chicken. Tom Yum Gai soup is also a personal favorite of mine. Try the soy milk which is both healthy and refreshing to the pallet. All meals include appetizer, soup and choice of steamed or fried rice. Ample parking on the street or in the municipal lot behind the building.
Who would ever have thought that Winona would have a restaurant that serves unique, flavorful, homemade food. Is Dim Sum next!?
I spent two months living in a Bangkok hotel and tried many dishes that I could not pronounce. I was never disappointed with the taste of anything, whether it came from a street vendor or a restaurant. Thai food is just plain good food.
