Best fake meat ever!!!
I don't even seek fake meat out, but the fake meat they use here has a great flavor. I read in the San Jose Merc that their meat is actually some exotic variety of mushroom - they said shittake mushroom stems though it doesn't really look or taste like that. It really doesn't taste like meat either for that matter. Their fake meat actually costs a couple dollars more than their real meat ($10-$11/dish for the fake meat), and even though I'm not a vegetarian I seek out their fake stuff because it's so tasty and full of unami. Also they specifically try to use less oil which is a definite plus in my book.
Even though there's a whole fake meat menu, we always order the same one: Black Pepper Veggie Beef. The "beef" has a good full meaty flavor and the overall taste of the dish is like regular pepper beef. (A+)
Unfortunately the dishes on the regular menu aren't nearly as good. For instance, the Chicken with Broccoli (C+) is bland but includes very good quality chicken (white meat) and broccoli (we've also ordered other dishes but they were forgettable). However, the Egg Drop Soup (A-) is definitely worth ordering. It's big enough for two plus leftovers (typical of all the dishes at Chef Ko) and even includes baby corn and broccoli.
The atmosphere is nice enough (and sadly the restaurant is always empty) and the service is always attentive and efficient.
