Wing Wong

I did my part to fight the SARS paranoia as well as the gringo-only menu phemomenon at Wing Wong, a newish Foo Chow restaurant on the corner of Eldridge and (Broome?).

The waitress put up quite a fight trying to keep me from getting the regular Chinese menu and kept trying to force the lunch special list on me. I won the battle but lost the war as the bowl of noodles with duck and taro from the regular menu lacked any assertive flavor and the duck meat was just a couple of strands of sinnewy grey flesh clingling to some tiny chopped bones.

I had to save face at that point so I choked down as many noodles as I could handle before politely requesting a to-go container and running off to Sun Dou for spicy pork dumplings as quickly as possible.
