Wine Vault & Bistro Review - San Diego

Despite posting all over other Chowhound boards, this is my first post on my hometown board!

After finding info on here about the Wine Vault and Bistro, we decided to give it a try as we love traditional bistros and wine cafes (counting down the days until Paris!). We went to the Wine Vault for a Friday night wine tasting of four wines and one champagne. Along with that, we ordered a cheese plate and a chicken sandwich. The cheese plate was good, one bleu, one brie and a very stinky cheese that I couldn't eat, but my fiancé enjoyed. It was served with a few slices of bread, apricots and pecans. The only downside is that it could have used a bit more bread or some crackers. With two strong cheeses and one a little lighter, it needed something more to cleanse the palate between tastes. Additionally, I think instead of three soft cheeses, it would have been nice to have two soft and one hard to compliment each other a bit better. The chicken sandwich was fabulous and left us wanting more. It consisted of a grilled chicken breast on a fluffy roll with a chili type mayonnaise that had some serious kick, and was delicious. It came with a side of potato salad that was equally tasty. I would call it gourmet picnic food and a perfect accompaniment to the wine tasting and overall ambience of the Wine Vault.

We do have one complaint and it was that they started breaking down everything at 9:30. They are supposed to be open until 10:00 and I understand wanting to close on time, but in my opinion, they should have waited until customers finished their wine flights before moving chairs up on to tables and making the general loud noises which come along with closing a restaurant. It was rather distracting and the people remaining when we left looked rushed and uncomfortable. Wine tasting is supposed to be a relaxing experience, not one when you feel as if your hosts are waiting for you to leave. Further, the owner was the only one in control of the register so he looked a bit frantic at times between getting people rung up and a bit distracted when trying to greet those walking in. I love wineries or bistros where the owner takes a moment to welcome visitors and put you at ease. All in all, I believe these are quirks that will get worked out once the Wine Vault has been open a bit longer.

Overall, the wine was great as was the food and we look forward to going back, we'll just make sure it's earlier in the evening rather than later. ;)
