We recently spent 5 days visiting various spots in the Piemonte region, basing ourselves in Sinio. We did lots of wine tasting at various enotecas and cantinas while we were there, but by far the biggest highlight was our unplanned stop in Bottega del Barolo, located in La Morra. The proprietor, Danielo, has a clear zest and enthusiasm for wines, and he gave 2 of us samples of at least 8 different wines, including an amazing bottle from 1982! He did not charge any kind of tasting fee (unlike many of the enotecas), and he did not put any sales pressure on us.
It's rare that you find someone so genuine and enthusiastic, who wants to share knowledge and help clients really understand the complexities of the wine. He poured us multiple Barolos side by side so that we could taste the differences from year to year, and unlike several of the other places that were only pouring wines from 2007 that were still young and just barely ready to drink, he was generous enough to open several older bottles that tasted more like what a properly aged Barolo should be.
All in all, a true pleasure, and one of the highlights of our entire trip! If you are in the region, we can't recommend highly enough a stop to see Danielo! The website for the shop is http://www.labottegadelbarolo.com
