Long time since I've posted a "Wine Deal" here and previously most were under $15. But since today is National Champagne Day and New Year's Eve, here's my pick for best value in Champagne.
NV Launois "Cuvée Reserve" Brut Champagne in magnum (1.5L) is $74.99 at K&L Wine Merchants. One of its direct imports, this is a Blanc de Blancs, meaning that it's all Chardonnay. Further, this is all Grand Cru from the villages of Mesnil, Oger, Cramant and Avize. Such a crazy bargain to get this kind of elegance and breed for so little money. I've been buying Launois since K&L started bringing it in a few years ago, and pop them open for immediate consumption, or sometimes keeping them for a year or three in 750s or mags.
The bottle depicted was opened this past Thanksgiving weekend after two years of cellar age. Vibrant green apple, blossoms and lemon curd on the nose and palate with chalky minerality and mellowed acidity, grown fatter and fuller with extra biscuit and toasted brioche from aging. Delicate yet voluminous at the same time. 93 points
K&L (San Francisco, Redwood City, Hollywood) still has a few magnums in the warehouse. The 750s are sold out.
