Windsor’s La Reyna Bakery (Panaderia & Tortilleria) Teetering on the Edge . . . and Rosca de Reyes

Melanie Wong | Dec 4, 200904:42 PM

This afternoon I stopped by La Reyna in Windsor and had a profound experience there. I wanted to order a Rosca de Reyes (Mexican-style kings cake) for a party next week. The first two staff seemed unsure about helping me, and then I spoke to a lady who appeared to be in charge.

“We make beautiful rosca de reyes, I’m sorry we don’t have a sample here for you to see”, she said. “The reason is that we are in the middle of trying to decide whether we shut down this weekend or push on. So, I’m not sure about taking your order.”

“Oh my goodness! That’s an enormous decision to make. Should I come back later? I hope you will keep going and continue to serve this community. I’d ordered Pan de Muertos from you before and my guests so enjoyed sharing the tradition. I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else”, I blurted out.

Then she said, “Would you mind waiting 5 minutes till we finish our meeting?”

I nodded and soon she came back out to the front. “We are going to push ahead. You made the difference and we’ll keep going. I can take your order.”

A medium-size rosca de reyes, the size recommended for our group of 22, is $25.99, paid in advance.
