Well, what can I say? I finally made the jump from Chicago to New York (Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to be specific) and man alive, am I ready to get eating!
Chowhound in Chicago had a GREAT message board that helped me to survive (sometimes, literally) four years of college in the midwest (I'm from San Francisco) with shockingly little culinary carnage. I even got pointed to some Chicago places that I'd consider keepers in any city. So, obivously, first thing I had to do, upon coming back to civilizaton, was to check in with you guys.
Help get me started, please! Point me towards all the great places in hood my hood(I'm off the Graham stop on the L) and all the cool hidden places around town. Extra points are, of course, given for places one just can't believe are as cheap as they are (hey, I'm just out of school, sue me!) and also places where I'll be the only gringo. In particular, I really dig authentic mexican places, funky brunch and breakfast spots (a la "Orange" or "Walker Brothers" in Chicago) cheap, though excellent, sushi, and, of course, Indian. Good, cheap bistros are always good, too. To get started, send me the places so good I've got to go ASAP!
I know this is asking a lot, but I'd really appreciate your sending me your thoughts as they come to you. I know NY is a food mecca and I can't wait to have some of your wisedom to get started on.
