I am always on the lookout for a certain kind of Vietnamese place, one that charters a mid-point between the fancier-long-menu-and-buzz sort (e.g. Tamarind Tree in its prime) and the bare-bones-but-restorative-weekend-morning-type (e.g. Hoang Lan). Inside polished-but-simple digs on MLK Way S, Wicked Chopstix fills that niche admirably. My favorite dish is the Hanoi classic Chả Cá Lá Vọng / Sizzling Fish and Dill Vermicelli, "catfish with dill and onions on a sizzling hotplate, lettuce, fresh herbs, cucumber, PEANUTS, and a side of fermented shrimp paste (can be replaced with fish sauce)." Of course, Wicked offers nice versions of pho and more familiar vermicelli noodle plates, as well as something called "Obama noodle", which is perhaps a reference to the former President's appearance on Anthony Bourdain's show. All of the appetizers I've tried have been v. good.
