Lunch today had nothing in common with the empty dining room we saw Saturday night. At one point about 25 or more people filled virtually every table of this Afghan hole in the wall where numbered photos of the food comprised the menu above the counter. The chicken kebabs were succulent, juicy and flavorful and, yes, better than Moby's! Along with Ravi Kebab in Arlington perhaps the best in the area. The rice was very good, salad (lettuce, tomato, yogurt dressing) was adequate; but what put this kebabs over the top was the house made "chutney" which is a greenish brown vinegary hot sauce in squeeze bottles on every table. Distinctive from any other sauce that I have had, perhaps similar in some ways to the consistency of an Eastern Carolina bbq sauce but with a unique, piquant vinegary flavor. House made yogurt was passable, also in squeeze bottles.
For lunch there was a $5.95 buffet with daily specials that at least half of the people seemed to be eating. It looked good!
Remarkable that such a dump lost in the back of a small strip shopping center in a forgotten part of Reston would have such good kebabs. My guess is that there is a connection with Washington Flyer since many of the drivers are Afghan and live in westernFairfax County.
Thanks to Dennis and Bilrus for turning me on to this. Shamshiry is still better-but it's also very different and on another level. Reston Kebab really does compare very favorable to Moby's. I never would have guessed....and I live one mile away! Whoa!
