White Tumeric

I don't recall reading references on the use of white tumeric. It's always yellow tumeric. Is tumeric used as a flavoring agent in addition to its coloring properties? The white tumeric, while somewhat peppery, has a very mild flavor that would seem (to me anyway) to get lost in the dish.

I guess my question is - what is the point of white tumeric?
