I was just in WRJ on a business trip and wanted to share some observations and opinions.
lunch at Simon Pearce in Quechee - superb as always. Cheddar cheese soup with scones and brown bread, delicious crusty trout with mashed potato and celery root and a light wine and blue cheese sauce, yummy apple pie with caramel and fine vanilla ice cream.
Very nice dinner at the Norwich Inn in Norwich, VT. Good salad and bread, duck breast with farro and beet 'risotto', nice Cabernet, tasty profiteroles with coffee ice cream. My friend loves their crab cakes, which were indeed full of lump crabmeat. Rather werid waitress and hostess, kind of smarmy, but not really objectionable.
breakfast at 4Aces Diner in Lebanon NH - really bad. I've heard that they have good sweet potato fries at lunch, but I'm not inclined to go back. Wonder bread french toast with fake syrup, weak coffee, questionable corned beef hash, lots of smoke! it's NH, smoking is still allowed in restaurants. Ugh.
supper at Firestones in Quechee - good, enormous burgers, properly cooked ("we DO serve rare beef" - yahoo!), excellent fries, a pint of 'Harvest' seasonal Long Trail ale. Good, informed and thoughtful service.
breakfast!!! at Gilman's Fairlee Diner in Fairlee, VT. Best baked beans I've EVER had, eggs over easy, great crispy bacon, fine blueberry muffins, Green Mountain coffee. Lunch here has been outstanding as well.
