How do I know if whole wheat flour is still good?

I've had some whole wheat flour in the refrigerator for, well, I don't know, a long time. How can I tell if it's still good? If it smells fine, can I assume the finished product will taste fine and not make anyone sick?

My usual approach to food is that if it looks ok, smells ok and (where appropriate) tastes ok, it probably is ok. That's worked out so far.
