i've admittted to respecting the st. john hype, albeit not getting it. but after this thursdays experience, i'm aint doffin my hat no more.
three of us went; we shared roast bone marrow and parsley salad; jerusalem artichoke, red onion and olives; potted mallard (sort of a duck rillette) to start with and then eel with bacon; suckling kid with aioli; and duck. it ALL underwhelmed - the kid tasted rancid, the duck foul (sorry) and at one stage i had to beat a stategic retreat to the bathroom to discreetly toss out a mouthful into the garbage bin.
awful, awful. its going to take some doing to get me back there. and for all you die hard fans: will you at least concede that the cooking is now sullenly mediocre?
