Noticed the new signs up and lights on in the old, closed location of Star Chicken the other night. Oh no! Could it be any worse?!? A new Taco Bell has opened up there. Could we be any more cursed? Even a Del Taco would be miles ahead of a Taco Bell. If a Baja Fresh closed up and got taken over by yet another coffee place a couple of years ago, what is Taco Bell going to do other than threaten the useful in a pinch Jose Bernstein's? Didn't I read on this board some months ago that a Chipotle was going in there? Maybe I'm mixing it up with a location along Broxton, but I didn't see one during a quick drive down that street either.

At a different economic and culinary level, has anyone eaten at the new Yamato in the old Eurochow space? S. Irene Virbila wrote about how nice it was to have a new, casual place there, but she equated $30 per person with inexpensive. I see their menu with three-item combo plates for just under $20 including soup and rice, but I'm uncertain whether this equates to small tastes that need multiple courses for a satisfying meal or whether that will satisfy. Gosh, I wish they'd offer some sort of happy hour deal to lure me in the check it out the first time. If anyone has been, please post.

Happy New Year and good chowing in the year ahead. Anyone who hasn't, treat yourself by trying the pulled pork at Porky's, the best burger in L.A. at Philly West, the best croissant at Amandine, and the best cinnamon roll or crumb twist at Royal Donut.
