Thanks to all who gave me suggestions for happy hour in Westwood. I have little familiarity with the restaurants in this area, and so appreciated the tips.
We ended up going to Tengu and sat at the bar. While not the best sushi I've ever tasted, the atmosphere was just what we were looking for -- it's a stylish, pretty restaurant, not too crowded (we got seats at the bar immediately) and good service. We ordered off their bar menu, which had various rolls (tuna, spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, salmon skin, california roll, etc.) for 3-4 dollars, and selected tempura and other hot preparations ranging from $3-8. The best thing we had were the edamame -- they were served hot and lightly salted, which is exactly how I like them. The spicy tuna roll, while small, was well spiced and had chunks of tuna rather than the "mash" you sometimes get. The california roll was pretty standard, as was the spicy yellowtail. We also had an albacore tempura roll, the best part of which was a delicious, vinegary-spicy slaw served on top of the cut roll. This was the most expensive roll at $8, but it was big (probably 12 pieces). Wines by the glass were generously poured (although not cheap, in the 9-12 range per glass) and they had a decent selection. I didn't get the vintages, but there were four whites and at least four reds -- a friend had the zinfandel and liked it; I had the fume blanc (I believe it was the Gloria Ferrar). Over all, we got in and out in the time allotted (we were attending an 8 p.m. show at UCLA), valet parking was available, and its location on Lindbrook made for easy access to the UCLA campus despite rush hour traffic in Westwood. While I probably wouldn't make it a destination, it's a good spot to know about if you need a place to meet up in Westwood Village.
