I recently got back home from my first trip to Texas! The focus of the trip was Big Bend National Park and Marfa, although we stopped by other places, too.
Our first stop was Midland, although we had to change planes in Houston to get there. I normally don't post about airport food, and I normally don't get hamburgers at Mexican restaurants, but the burger at Hugo's Cocina at the airport was terrific and juicy in the best way. My wife and son got tacos, which they actually didn't like too much, which I thought was odd. We weren't crazy about Jorge's, another Mexican restaurant where we had dinner in Midland. The guac was good, but the rest of the food, like the chile relleno, was blah.
The next day we drove to Big Bend and stopped for lunch at Come & Take It barbeque in Alpine. While the brisket was drier than I like, the ribs were sublime and the sides were great. I very much recommend this place. When we visited Big Bend, we stayed in Terlingua, a small nearby town. We stayed at a "guest house" with a cafe called La Posada Milagro. I enjoyed the Mexican egg sandwiches we got there. Next door to the guest house was the Starlight Cafe, a bar/restaurant/live music venue. I loved the burger I got there (I was making the most of beef consumption on this trip!), chips and guac, quail, and a jalapeno-infused margarita that they call a "horni toad." My wife also enjoyed margarita they made with sotol, which is an agave-based spirit that tastes kind of in between tequila and mezcal.
As a side trip from our visit to Marfa, we went to Fort Davis to see the observatory and ate dinner at the Fort Davis Drugstore and Hotel. It wasn't the greatest food, but a nice place if you want a comfort food/soda fountain shop kind of scene, In Marfa itself, we loved the spicy sandwiches we got at the Food Shark Truck, delicious rare but really flavorful steak at Capri, and a meal at Cochineal. A little bit on the outskirts of Marfa is Mando's, a Tex-Mex place with a great chile relleno and lovely enchiladas.
We flew out of El Paso, and ate at two Tex-Mex places there: Dominguez, near the airport, and L & J's, which seems very much like a destination. Dominguez really wasn't anything special. At L & J's, I got a delicious chicken mole enchilada and my wife got the signature green chile enchilada, which was OK but not as good as the enchilada with mole.
All in all, it was a great trip! I'm looking forward to coming back some day.
