We ate at West last night - what can I say - it was fabulous. Great room - "library style" wine racks behind the bar, which is separated from the main room by a glass partition. Mirrors on the wall opposite the bar high enough that you're not constantly catching sight of yourself during the meal, but not so high that they don't increase the feeling of light & space. Enough room between the tables that one's conversation isn't restricted to platitudes, and surprisingly comfortable chairs (they don't look as though they would be). The greeting was cheerful & friendly, and the service was great - attentive but not obsequious, and the waitress remembered that I can't eat walnuts & didn't make a fuss about changing the bread for my cheese course - it just happened.
We had the two current tasting menus - land & sea. The food was amazing - standouts remain the asparagus, bacon & truffle risotto, the foie gras & chicken liver parfait, the salmon with crisp polenta (panko crumbs on the outside, I think - wonderful), the crab salad on celeriac was apparently so fresh it could have been alive immediately before serving (I wasn't allowed to try it - but apparently the crisp tartness of the apples was a wonderful counterpoint), the spiced pear compote (using mace, I think) was delicious with the aged cheddar, the blood orange vinaigrette with the greens under the seared tuna was stunning, and the chocolate marzipan pudding was a perfect end to the meal. I can nitpick - the apple jelly under the parfait could have been a bit more present, the lamb was perhaps a little too much on the side of medium (but it still melted in my mouth - and the vegetables were perfect - god it was good), and the panna cotta, though beautifully presented, was - well - boring. But these are VERY SMALL points - the meal was great - the flavours & textures matched & harmonized beautifully.
I wouldn't hesitate recommending this restaurant to everyone - it well deserves the reputation as one of the top restaurants in the city - it was one of the best meals I have had in a while.
