My husband is going to be teaching at the Universite de Montreal for six weeks this summer. We'll be living two blocks from the law school, which I'm guessing is wherever the main campus is. We'll be cooking in our apartment a fair bit, but we're also planning on sampling a great deal of Montreal food.
I've read the board back to the beginning of 2004 and I've got a big file of recommendations copied, but I know that tastes change and places close, so I thought I'd ask for some fresh recs. We'll be on a bit of a budget, but we will be having a few splurges. We love good food but not stuffy service or stuffy atmosphere. We eat everything but Indian, which doesn't agree with me. I'm looking for holes in the wall, creperies, diners, ethnic dining of all kinds (especially Japanese and any Middle Eastern food), and a couple of relaxed splurgey type places. We'll have a car and are willing to use all modes of public transportation, so we can access any part of the city (and outside the city).
I'd also be interested in hearing about great markets, farmers markets, bakeries, cheese shops, places to buy wine. The places you go when you live somewhere. We plan to try to pretend like we actually do live there - live like locals, eat like locals.
Thanks in advance for any ideas. I've never been let down by Chowhound!
