Back from Two+ Weeks on Maui

This has been pretty much our annual trip for several years now. We stay at Napili Kai so I will start my report there. The restaurant has a wonderful location by the water but they have had a bit of turnover with their chefs. Our dinner was okay but uneven. I'd say skip dinner but go for lunch. On a nice day sit out on the restaurant patio and enjoy the outdoors. Onion Rings haven't been on the adult menu for a few years now, but we always order them and find them to be superb.

Mala Ocean Tavern - very casual location by the water at the north end of Front St - across from the cannery mall. We had a good meal here and can recommend this.

David Paul's - had dinner here twice. This was the best we had on Maui.

Mama's Fish House - great location but they seem to be more interested in making a buck then providing a quality dining experience. The dining area keeps getting larger and the ambiance goes down a bit each year. We had a good meal here but the service was terrible. Very pricey, but you know that.

Sam Sato's in Wailuku - great local food, open for b'fast and lunch only. No tourists, other than us, were spotted during two visits.
A Saigon Cafe in Wailuku. Excellent Vietnamese food. Tricky to find as the restaurant name is not posted, only the address and an open sign on the building which sets underneath the Wailuku bridge. Look for the shooting stars on top of the building. Colorful service, very casual. We had not been here before and were mad at ourselves for missing this great place on prior visits. Go!

Waterfront Restaurant in Maalaea. Great selection of fresh fish at much more reasonable prices than Mama's. It's by the water, casual with what seems like an old fashioned room and slightly stuffy wait staff. Still, the food is good and the price is right. A bit tricky to find the first time, check the directions in one of the tourist handouts.

Plantation Restaurant . Casual in a obviously expensive building and location at the Plantation course in Kapalua. I thought this seemed to be a corporate restaurant. All show and no soul.

Sansei in Kapalua. We were very disappointed here. The new room has a cold feel to it, and the food seemed uninspired - as was our wait person.

Finally, Honokawai Okayuza on lower Honoapillani Road. A great place for takeout. The food is cooked to order and the price if right.
