Hello all. We just spent a great weekend in NYC(my wife and I with another couple) Started friday with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot at the Meridian(our hotel). Great way to shake off a flight and ride from LGA. We arrived early at The Modern(45 minutes) and asked if it were possible to start early. After 2 minutes we were taken to our table. Great location with both of us facing the entire restaurant. Very nice space with nice buzz from the crowd but not too loud. Started off with a CoPain Viognier 2008 Tous Ensemble. We had the Chef Tasting Menu. Before the tasting menu started we were served a few amuse Bouche. All good but the sesame snapper was the best. First course Foie GrasTerrine. The juniper Raisins really stood out. Next Tartare of Yellowfin Tuna and Diver scallops. excellent dish. Very fresh taste seasoned perfectly. Ravioli of Escargot nice but nothing to write home about. However the Maine Lobster Cappuccino changed that. Thick broth with a very lobster flavor. Small amounts of lobster in the cup but really not needed. The flavor had a 1 minute after taste like a great wine might. Switched to a Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Mt .Carmel. soft right on the mark. Next course Chorizo-Crusted Codfish. Crisp top with very easily flaked underside. Light but the Harissa Oil served it well. Next course the stopper for me Duck Breast with Black Trumpet Marmalade. I thought the duck was the most tender I have ever had.(my wife agreed) cut with a fork and perfectly done med-rare. Last course Pineapple Chartreuse with fresh herb sorbet. excellent if you like pineapple and I do. Herb sorbet light but very refreshing. Fresh coffee and a tray of candies and other treats followed. All in all a great evening(the other couple was in Little Italy). We did meet the other couple at Bin 71 upper west side columbus and west71st. great spot to meet in a very friendly neigborhood bar setting. The next morning walked over to Bouchon at Columbus circle. Wanted to try a couple small items. I had to try the macaroons(1 pumpkin and 1 pistachio) soft with great flavors. VERY rich tasting. Also my wife tried a small madeleine cookie. light fresh and slight hint of vanilla. She ended with a scone made with cheese bacon and chives. It was warmed and was excellent with the fresh coffee. That really started our am walk thru central park on the right foot. Lunch was at Chinatown Brasserie. The other couple never had Dim Sum and really enjoyed the variety. While not compairable to Shanghi the Dim Sum recieved a passing grade from me. After Wicked afternoon show we made our way to our dinner. 9pm seating at Peter Lugar . Now after reading all the glowing reviews I must say I was excited to see what all the fuss was about. Our friends are hugh steak fans and they talked about this dinner for 2 months prior to our arrival. 9pm reservation seated at 940. Loud bar more saloon than bar. Waiter was very friendly. Ordered bottle of cab for table. Bread arrived quickly with butter. Bread was average not warm. Salad next. Not really a salad but large cut slices of onion and tomato. no dressing. We were given Lugars special sauce. think steak sauce meets cocktail suace. It wasn't bad but it wasn't anything I would look to take home with me for another day. we ordered steak for 2 times 2. steak arrived really quick. sides spinach(average at best) and german potatos(dry and no flavor). so sides less than to be desired. Steak was very very tender and cooked perfectly. We all loved the steak so I was happy. But overall IF you look at the whole dinner alittle bit bummed out. But please don't get me wrong to be in nyc with wife and friends(kid free) priceless. Moved over to Dresslers across the street for an afterdinner drink. Excellent bar very friendly people at the bar and working it. the weekend was alot of fun and as usually met alot of very nice people in the city. thanks
