Weekend Trip Report

Since so many of you have offered advice in the past, I wanted to report back after a quick weekend trip to New Olreans with my husband to bring my son back for another year of college. We were looking for somewhat simple food slections that would please a "twenty-something" in an upscale atmosphere.
First, we dined at GW Fins (had been there before). The staff was extremely friendly and attentive but the place seemed a bit more commercial in feel than I had remembered it. This may have been bc it was late and the big room was not filled to capacity at the time. I tried a spinach salad with strawberries, walnuts, and goat cheese that had way too much balsalmic dressing and too many conflicting flavors in my opinion. I moved on to the pompano which had a fishy taste. Others had good seafood gumbo and delicious lobster dumplings. They also enjoyed scallops and amberjack entrees. The molten chocolate cake for dessert was wonderful.
For the second night, my son selected Table One on Magazine Street. We sat upstairs in a pretty room with lovely chandeliers. Our waiter was pleasant but did not offer much advice about the menu. I ate another very fishy dish! I did not care for the crabcake appetizer and my filet mignon entree was just ok and dry. Others had oyster soup and the tomatoe salad and both continued with the shrimp and fettuccini. We liked Table One but would probably not opt to return because the experience was just an average one.
Lastly, we dined at Cuvee. We thought about trying Stella but were concerned that the menu might be too adventurous for our son. We had also been to Cuvee before---but loved it this time. The room and bar area are warm and inviting. Dark woods and brick walls make this a comfortable if not somewhat formal atmosphere. The service was friendly and pleasant. We started with their wonderful spiced shrimp napoleon and two chopped salads with apples and bacon. All were haapy. I had a delicious redfish and others loved the flatiron steak. The waiter suggested the stacked chocolate moonpie which we did not really care for. Still---all three of us enjoyed this dinner immensely.
Lastly, (as a Tulane family with fond memories of the past) we HAD to stop for a late llunch at the Camelia Grill. Even though the owners are new, the special "flavor" of the place is still the same. Same jokes at the counter, same long wait to get in. same pink paint and crooked pictures on the walls! But if you appreciate the legacy of The Grill----"the same" is priceless. We ate hamburgers and chicken samdwiches ("dressed" of course!) , fries, and yummy chocolate freezes. If you go to the Grill, you go all the way!
Thanks for more memories New Orleans. Glad to see that you are re-building and hanging in there. We WILL return soon to try more of your food and make new memories.
