My weekend in NOLA, hits, one miss and heaven on earth

Mushroom | Sep 30, 2003 05:29 PM

Just got back from NOLA and only had one real miss - Central Grocery Muffuletta (I know - big surprise). However, it was someone else's pick, so I take no responsibility.

We (and by we I mean I)had a whole itinerary planned, but spontaneity won out. Along the way we come upon some pleasant surprises. Such as - Clover Grill, we had the hamburgers with Blue Cheese on them. And a little grocery place I think it was called Verti Marte(?)for a really wonderful muffuletta. Irene's - it was close to our hotel and was recommended by some locals - very tasty soft-shelled crab. Another one (once again, not my pick) was Court of Two Sisters - maybe it was having zero expectations or the fact that I hadn't ate since 5:30 that morning. Whatever, it was good.

I had been to Johnny's Po-Boys on my last visit and absolutely loved their Crawfish Po-Boy with tons of Crystal Sauce on it and it did not disapoint this time. I suppose I should try someplace new on my next visit, but I tend to go with what I know.

And finally, Brigtsen's. Ahhhh, Brigtsen's. I have to admit I was kind of forced in to this one. Last time I was in NOLA we went there and my duck was over done and I had crappy service. Thank God for second chances. I had the Seafood Platter and one of the portions almost brought me to tears. We four Midwestern girls decided it was our favorite restaurant. Ever. As my luck would have it I had the same waitress and she was a real joy this time. She brought us back to meet Frank. What a blast! He said he might be coming to Kansas City to be a guest chef at 40 Sardines - so I've been instructed by my friends to keep on eye out for his arrival

Thanks NOLA, can't wait to eat you again! (Sorry, I love a good pun even if it's not that orginal.)
